Film Effects on Fox Sports

Tom Meegan, freelance editor, hired to build the in-game bumpers for the American League Championship Series and the World Series for FOX Sports, was searching for a way to enhance his video images.

“The HD images the FOX camera people and video technicians create start off looking terrific. I was searching for a way to enhance these fine images to visually convey the emotions of the game, and Nattress Film Effects were the answer. They provide a rich and textured look, that has helped make our production people very happy with the work.” said Tom Meegan.

Film Effects Facts

What do you get when you buy Film Effects?

Over 24 filters, and 6 transitions, and over 20 presets, a full PDF manual and access to the best tech support in the business.

What sets Film Effects apart from the competition?

Film Effects is a complete package. It features all the tools you need to make video look like film. Film Effects is not just a glorified colour corrector! Film Effects includes:

  • Film Dissolves,
  • De-interlacers (of all kinds, including excellent "Smart" de-interlacers) and great 24p simulation
  • Film gamma curves, specially designed to add drama and depth to any type of video
  • Powerful levels and curves
  • Chroma reconstruction filters to improve any chroma-subsampled video source (DV, HDV, HDCAM etc.)
  • and for fun, Film Damage effects
  • and more!

Which versions of FCP does Film Effects work in?

Film Effects is tested in FCP3, 4, 4.5 and 5, and works in FCE and FCE2. Film Effects is a native FCP plugin and hence has great compatibility, and takes advantage of either the Y'CbCr or RGB rendering pipeline as appropriate.

Why does Film Effects only cost $100, it can't be that good and that cheap?

We spend your money on R&D, not marketing and hype - it's that simple. We only sell via electronic download or through a select group of resellers, and that keeps the cost down. We believe in affordable software.

Free upgrades?

No Film Effects user, even those who first purchased version 1, has ever been charged for any of the many upgraded versions that have been released so far. We're now on Version 2.5.1 with Version 3.0 in development.

Tech Support?

It is often hard to get good tech support for computer software. That's why when you have a problem or question, it's the programmer of Film Effects that answers it, and answers it very rapidly.

I shoot 24p - why should I buy Film Effects?

Film Effects does more than just 24p! If you shoot 24p already, you can use the presets and wonderful gamma curves, and chroma enhancing filters to make your video look it's best.

I don't want my video to look like film, is Film Effects useful?

Practically every aspect of Film Effects is devoted to making video look better. The controls in the plugins give you immense power to make video look film or just to make video look better!

Can't I just do everything in the 3 way color corrector?

You can try, but there are many effects in Film Effects which just can't be created with traditional colour correction tools. That's why many of the elements of Film Effects are brought out into their own plugins so that you can use them creatively.

Creative Cow Podcast

Or is that Cowcast? Either way, there's an interview with me, Graeme Nattress on Episode 10, http://cowcast.creativecow.net/ where I talk about plugins in general, chroma reconstruction, uprezzing and affordable HD.

JVC HD100 24p

I keep getting asked how to use the JVC HD100 with FCP when shooting 24p. The best solution is LumiereHD, which is supporting the HD100 in it's latest version. With LumiereHD you can pick whatever codec you want to edit with.

If, however, you're happy using Apple's AIC codec, and just capturing HDV on the fly, and don't mind a quick trip to Cinema Tools, read this PDF to show you how. BTW, this trick doesn't seem to work for audio, but at least you can get the video in.

Film and Video talks HDV

Film and Video Magazine has a great article on using HDV, and a number of their writers are using Nattress Film Effects. They particularly like the new gamma effects that were introduced in the latest versions of Film Effects.

Film Effects on Fox Sports

Film Effects is being used on Fox Sports for the baseball playoffs. They are using a custom preset that was created for them for faster rendering of their 720p HD footage, and a beta of "G Film Progressive" which converts 60p to 24p.

HDV and 4:2:0 Chroma

Film Effects already has G Nicer, the filter that reconstructs 4:1:1 NTSC DV Chroma. I'm now working on filters that do similar magic with 4:2:0, making it suitable for PAL DV, DVD and HDV use. These filters use a chroma sharpening technique, and are also applicable to NTSC DV 4:1:1, and practically any other chroma sampling technique as well. They are available now in Film Effects V2.5.

Film Effects used on Disney's Mary Poppins!

Read the story here!

Film Effects V1.5 is used to create the film look for low budget indie DV movie "Recon 2020".

Recon 2020 is the latest movie from Montreal writer/director/editor Christian Viel. Set on an alien planet in a future time, it tells the violent story of what can go wrong on a recon mission where the soldiers face genetically engineered mutant humans, creatures, scavengers and cyborgs! Featuring more explosive pyrotechnics than even your typical Hollywood blockbuster, the action is non stop, and the weaponry the soldiers carry would put the marines from Aliens to shame.

The movie was shot on DV, edited on Final Cut Pro, and made extensive use of Nattress filters, including G Nicer and Film Effects for the final film look and chroma upsampling for output to DigiBeta.
